Disability insurance with pre-existing condition

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anyone knows how having a pre-existing condition affects disability insurance coverage?

I'm an incoming medical student at UBC. I attended the financial presentation put on by the university the other day, and in it they mentioned that having a pre-existing condition will complicate the insurance coverage. Personally, I have a permanent disability. Although it's been super well managed, I could have a flare up in the future that could force me to take time off school.

Anyhow, if anyone has experience with this and feels comfortable sharing, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

I'm going to be a doctor!

Sooooo, after many months of waiting for results, I was recently admitted to one of the best medical schools in my country! I never, EVER thought that I would be here 4.5 years ago when I was first diagnosed at 22. At that point, I'd just had my license revoked, had lost the job that I loved because of epilepsy, and had absolutely no idea what to do with my future. With that said, I never stopped believing that I would figure things out and it seems, at least for now, that I have. I know the journey ahead is going to be challenging, especially with epilepsy, but I am so proud of myself for having made it to this point in spite of (and at time because of) this disease. I'm scared of going through med school with epilepsy, but I also can't wait to get started 🥹

Seeking advice from non-trad med students

I was very fortunate to have received an offer to my dream school recently. Although I'm super excited, I know med school is going to be especially challenging for me given that I did a BA in a totally unrelated field. To any med students coming from a non-trad background: how has med school been for you so far? Would you say it's harder for you compared to your peers who did more traditional degrees like bio? Do you have much time for yourself outside of school?
