What do I do with this garden? UK based novice gardener.

Hello all, first post here.

I am in need of guidance on the best way to prevent this “garden“ from turning into a muddy quagmire over the winter.

I moved in late Simmer and fully cleared out all fallen leaves and weeds. I knew it was in a sorry state but I did not anticipate that all that would remain is a virtually non existent garden. It‘s 90% bare dirt, as you can see.

The goal is to try and turn this into a small lawn with planting beds to the sides with some bushes.

I began by following advice to cover it all with mulch to “protect” the soil but after doing a little bit I wanted different opinions because it doesn’t seem right. I’ve instead started shifting it to the perimeter where I plan to have berry bushes and around the compost bin.

Other advice says to cover it with a permeable fabric or something like leaf mould? I honestly don’t know and as the weather is getting wetter and wetter here in the UK I want to get this sorted.

I realise in hindsight I should have just left it all until Spring, but I started clearing all in summer so I thought I had all the time in the world to get my first garden in good shape. I have never had a garden, I know virtually nothing about gardening.

Help please!
