Questions from a beginner
I recently got into spearfishing. I don’t know anyone that is into it so I’m kind of just figuring it out myself but have been to some spots that are seemingly decent(Croatia and Sardinia) but never have much luck so it is definitely a me problem.
Where to spearfish?-
Since it is only my 4th time doing it in total I have just been going off the beach. I am comfortable going about .5 mile out with my buoy and can comfortably go down to about 40ft(my current spotter is literally half my size so I haven’t felt comfortable enough to really test my limits yet). However, I can never find many fish even when I look for structures and have never even seen an octopus. Any recommendations on maps that show topography or something so I know what to look for when I travel to different spots? Or maybe I should be looking for something for something else to find the good spots?
Gear?-
-I currently have a Hawaiian sling, I think this is my largest limiting factor second to not knowing where to go. I like it as a beginner spear but it’s only about 3 feet long so I don’t get much distance or speed out of it. Any recs?
-Also, I have a seemingly nice pair of Salvmar goggles but the anti-fog has already worn off even though I wash them with fresh water and keep them out of the sun after use. The nose piece of the goggles also fill up with water immediately every time. I also notice that when I get down to about 35-40 feet water slowly leaks in and I immediately can’t see anything.
-Got a cheap dive knife on Amazon, rusted after two uses. Any reccs?
How worried do I need to be about sharks? I grew up in a cornfield lol.
Even some good YouTube videos would be helpful.
Thank you!!
