Actor audition hypocrisy
I often hear actors say things like:
“I often book the audition when I have no time and just throw it on tape.”
“I was about to quit acting, an audition came in and I didn’t care about it all and I booked it.”
“I always book the audition I thought I did terrible on and didn’t really understand the story, I never book the audition I thought I did perfect”
“I booked my very first audition, I had no idea what I was doing then didn’t book for years”
We hear these stories all the time, and I imagine they’re probably true. But if you ask any actor ‘whats your audition process like’ they will go on and on about their script analysis and objectives and verbs for each line and framing and lighting, etc etc.
My question is… why the disconnect? Why do all the analysis and all the other stuff if so many people seem to admit that it’s the auditions they did off the cuff and on the fly that they book? Is it just a way to feel in control of something that really isn’t? Genuinely curious.
