The smallest town with a top-5 league club has just 3,191 people
Went down a rabbit hole ranking the smallest towns in Europe’s top-five leagues that still have a top-flight club for 2026/27, and some of these are wild.
Hoffenheim is the obvious one — the actual village has around 3,191 people, yet they’re playing Bundesliga football in a 30,000-seat arena a few km away. But it’s not even close to the only case. A few of these clubs represent towns most football fans have never heard of, and the contrast between the population and the level they play at is genuinely hard to believe.
Couple that stood out:
**•** Places where the stadium capacity is several times the town’s entire population
**•** Towns you could walk across in 15 minutes fielding a side against Bayern / PSG / etc.
Curious if any of you have actually groundhopped the smaller ones here — would love to know what the matchday atmosphere is like when the whole town is smaller than the away end.
I put the full ranked list together in a video if anyone wants the breakdown, but mostly curious about people’s first-hand experiences with these grounds 👇
