My squash game now has a career mode, more courts, and a Steam page — Tin Happens update

Hi everyone,

A little while ago, I posted the first gameplay footage of my squash game here. I wanted to share an update, including a few things that came up in the comments last time!

If you missed that post: I’m a software developer who’s been playing squash for almost 20 years, and I make games in my spare time. I’d wanted a modern squash game for ages, so eventually I started building one myself. It’s called Tin Happens.

The focus is still on making the squash feel right: shot selection, timing, positioning, and trying to recover to the T after a shot you immediately regret. But there’s now a lot more around the actual matches:

  • A career mode, from local leisure tournaments all the way to competing for world number one.
  • Local tournaments, character customisation, and more courts.
  • Online multiplayer with a ranked leaderboard, alongside AI and local matches.

u/Lodemai brought up career and tournament modes in the original thread — both are now in, though the career takes a competition-focused approach rather than the training-based progression you described. And u/Over-Earth-1167, there are now several different venues to play in!

As for u/srcejon’s suggestion that you should be able to argue with the referee about lets and strokes: you can request a let, and the game handles let, stroke, and no-let decisions. Shouting at the screen remains a feature you’ll have to provide yourself. :)

The other bit of news is that the Steam page is now live, with Early Access planned:

Tin Happens on Steam

If it looks like something you’d enjoy, I’d really appreciate a wishlist.

Thanks again to everyone who commented last time. Being able to share this with other squash players is a big part of the fun. Happy to answer questions!

I've been working on a squash game in my spare time – here's the first gameplay footage

I've been playing squash for almost 20 years and have been playing at a club for the last few years.

I'm also a software developer and I've always loved making video games as a hobby. Most of them never get much further than the prototype stage – but for quite a while I've had this idea in the back of my head:

Why isn't there a proper modern squash game?

So eventually I started building one myself.

This is Tin Happens.

It's still very early and visually obviously very much a work in progress. For now I've deliberately spent most of my time on the part I care about most: making the actual squash feel right.

Ball physics, drives, crosscourts, drops, boasts, lobs, movement around the T, different ball types, rallies that hopefully develop somewhat like actual squash rather than just "hit ball at wall".

And... it's starting to become genuinely fun to play.

I've already had some surprisingly realistic rallies against the AI and in local matches against other squash players. The funny thing is that we're starting to make some of the same bad decisions we make on a real court. 😄

The clip is from the current prototype running on a Steam Deck.

There are still placeholder models, animations, UI and a LOT of things I want to improve, so please don't judge it as a finished game.

But I'd really love to hear what other squash players think:

Does the gameplay already look like squash to you?

And more importantly: if someone actually made a proper squash game, what would you want from it?
