Inquiry

Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying paramedicine and will be graduating at the end of next year. Due to NSW licensing requirements, I won't have my full driver's licence immediately after graduating, so there'll likely be a period where I can't apply for a graduate paramedic position.

I was wondering if working as an Ambulance Call Taker or Dispatcher during that time would be worthwhile. My thinking is that it would keep me involved with the ambulance service, help me gain experience with the systems and job, and show on my graduate application that I've stayed engaged rather than doing unrelated work while waiting for my full licence.

For anyone who's been in a similar position or has experience with recruitment:

  • Does working as a Call Taker/Dispatcher make you a stronger applicant for graduate paramedic roles?
  • Is it looked upon favourably by recruitment panels?
  • Or would I be better off focusing on other healthcare roles while I wait?

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!
