Is a deal you have to chase already dead?

I've been in B2B sales about eight months and I keep getting told that if I'm the one following up every single time, the deal is already gone and I just haven't admitted it yet. I've got four like that right now, all of them past the date the buyer gave me, all of them still replying eventually. I'm not sure whether that advice is about pipeline hygiene or about not wasting my week.

For the people who've carried a quota for years, how did you learn where that line actually was?

Why do position players pitch in blowouts instead of just using a real reliever?

Newer to watching regularly. Saw a game where a team down big in the 8th put an outfielder on the mound and he was throwing 50mph lobs. Crowd loved it, but it seemed like a weird way to treat an inning.

Is this purely about saving the bullpen for the next few days, or is there more to it? And do the hitters facing him take it seriously or is everyone kind of in on it?
