Phone plan question for American study abroad student

Hello. I am an American student who will be studying abroad at st Andrew’s in the fall. I am trying to figure out how / what phone plan to get.

My program requires me to be able to receive and make international and UK calls. I also heard from my program that Amazon prime requires a UK number to make a UK account. My phone is an iPhone 15 and it only supports eSims.

When looking into plans nothing has been clear on what it provides calls and messages wise for eSims. Often we can find how much data you can get. But other than that we can’t find any information. From what I’ve learned eSIMs are not the standard. And my program is not being very helpful on guiding us through this process. So any help by someone who has experienced this would be greatly appreciated.

I want to find the cheapest way to receive international and UK calls and the cheapest way to keep in contact with family at home and anyone I meet in Scotland. And if the Amazon prime thing is true then I want to get a UK number as well. Also ideally I would not have to buy a new phone.

Thank you for any information!
