Dr. Sheppard, worrying that Roger Ackroyd will have heard about his blackmail of Mrs. Ferrars, is making plans to kill Roger, y'know, just in case. Sure. One of those preparations is to rig up Roger's dictaphone so it can be set to start playing at a given time. All well and good. My question is, how could Sheppard possibly know that anyone would wander within earshot during the duration of the dictaphone tape playing?!<
