If you could only take one rod offshore, what would it be?

Got a trip coming up for a full day on a private boat targeting yellowtail, tuna, dorado etc… due to limited space, I’m trying to cut down the number of rods I’m bringing to just one or two setups. I have rods for every occasion: live bait, vertical jigging, trolling, surface irons.. you name it. I’m just curious to hear if you guys were forced to take only one setup, what would it be and why?

What setups do you take offshore?

For context, I have experience offshore fishing for yellowtail, tuna, dorado etc… it’s been a while, but I just booked my trip for next month and I’m pumped. This is a full day private boat where we’ll most likely target yellowtail and white sea bass, but who knows? The tuna could be close as well. The reason for my post is that I want to add a good jig stick to my arsenal. Preferably a 9’ calstar or seeker deckhand rod. I’m just curious to see what people’s go-to setups are and how many different types of rods they’re bringing. I have plenty of different setups ranging from 20lb for small yellows to 130lb for those cow tuna. However, all my rods are shorter and designed for live bait, vertical jigging, or trolling.

Mission Bay / San Diego halibut

For context, I’m brand new to the whole shore fishing scene. I have plenty of experience fishing offshore for tuna and yellowtail, and inland fishing mountain lakes and streams for trout. This year I wanted to try something new and fish for halibut off the shore / jetties etc… it is one of my favorite eating fish and I’ve never caught one. I’ve done a little research already, where I learned that the grunion runs are a good time to target. Other than that, I’m pretty clueless on tackle, time of day to target, and what to look for as far as picking a spot goes. I’ve noticed that Mission and San Diego bay are popular areas for this type of fishing. Any further advice is much appreciated!
