Caution in Bushwick (11221): Mail delivery suspended & false "Refused" scans used by local USPS carriers after misconduct complaint
Hey Brooklyn community,
I’m posting to see whether anyone else in Bushwick / 11221 has experienced similar issues with mail delivery through the Bushwick Post Office.
On September 30, I encountered our regular mail carrier at the entrance of my building while she had a package addressed to my apartment. The package was too large to fit through our mailbox slot, so I politely identified myself and asked if she could hand it to me.
She refused and said she was going to put it in the mailbox anyway. When I questioned this, the interaction escalated. She became hostile, directed a racial slur at me, calling me a “Spanish bitch,” and made comments about my weight/body while I am visibly 29 weeks pregnant.
Once I realized how aggressive the interaction was becoming, I began recording on my phone. Our building’s surveillance cameras also captured the encounter.
I subsequently reported the incident to USPS management.
Since making that complaint, we have experienced what appears to be a serious disruption in mail delivery to our address.
Today, Saturday, October 3, an incoming package was updated at 3:38 PM as “Refused by Addressee — Return to Sender.”
Nobody at our address refused the package.
We immediately checked our security footage. At approximately the same time the package was marked “refused,” the postal truck was parked down the block. Our cameras show no carrier approaching our building or attempting to deliver the package.
I then approached the carrier down the street and asked for my package/mail. I recorded that interaction as well. He refused to give me the package, stated that he was not delivering our mail, and drove away.
We have preserved the original surveillance footage, phone recordings, and tracking information and submitted the evidence to USPS management and the USPS Office of Inspector General. We have requested an investigation into the apparent withholding of our mail and delivery scans that do not match what our security footage shows.
At this point, I’m mainly trying to find out whether this is an isolated situation or whether other residents on this route have experienced similar problems.
