How do societies work?

I’ve tried searching tiktok but i just keep getting rugby initiation fear mongering videos. I just want a kind of walk through on how societies and freshers week works.

You don’t have to answer each question just a run down on the process.

Assuming they advertise each society, do they usually invite you to some kind of event/trial session?

If there’s multiple i want to try how realistic is it for me to attend the “trial session/period” of multiple 3-5 for example.

How does trying them out usually work, is it some sort of event/game day. Or maybe a gathering in the evening or something?

Can i just turn up to any one that i hear about and if so how do i find out where and when it’s located? Is there a central timetable that shows all societies timetables? Or even at freshers is there an event timetable?

And for sports ones can i join without being good at the sport? Which ones are the best for socialising besides sports?

Am i thinking about this too much?

Will a studio flat eat me alive?

I’ll be staying in a studio flat in Block P of Manor Park. So a couple of questions since of course i wont have any flat mates.

  1. Is there a common area that i can go to meet people?

  2. How difficult is it to make friends while staying in a studio?

  3. Are the walls thin, how much noise leaks through to/from other rooms. (For music) 👀👀👀👀👀

  4. Is it normal to knock on someone else’s door if they like in a studio next to yours? (assuming they are arranged in a hallway).

Couple of First Year Questions

I will be a fresher this September at surrey siding comp sci i just have a few questions. (Going to be quite long). Even short answers will help

How does the moving process work I’ve seen people on TikTok go move in or at least look at their acom during August and have allot of time to move in. I’m going to uni of Surrey and they took my preferences and I’m waiting for the results of my acom application.

So do they give me access after results day after which i can visit freely until freshers week (19 sept) to pack my stuff or is there a day everyone comes in to pack their stuff.

And i applied for a studio so that i don’t share a kitchen. I truly can’t bring myself to trust the hygiene of other people. Do you think there’s a real reason to panic if I’m stuck sharing. Or at least what are the main concerns when sharing.

I also don’t like the idea of clubbing, i personally don’t drink, so u feel like i would be awkward in a party or club situation. In fact i will be i know it. I’m a bit weird. So I’ll likely stick to joining societies and meeting people organically around uni . How easy would you say it is to make friends.

What are also some essentials to bring with me to uni. That aren’t so obvious not talking like a mattress topper or some basic shit like things you only realised when you got there. And what are some things you recommend setting up or applying for.

Also how does the laundry situation work i don’t understand.

Also what clubs/societies tend to have the most drama i want to ease my boredom.

AND ALSO how easy is it to get a stable job cause i heard some people say to apply in advance and some say it’s easy

How does accommodation work?

Im attending Surrey university in September as an undergraduate.

How does accommodation work? I missed creating my accommodation account from the email sent in January and only just applied 2 days off the deadline. I chose my preferences and want a studio.

How do they give the rooms? Will me applying late mean i wont be able to get my preferred room?
