Shell identification please Thames, London Uk

Hi this was found on the Thames in London, UK. Not sure if it is a native species or has come from ballast? Thanks

Found on the Thames foreshore, London

Is it possibly fossilised wood?

Heavy copper? sleeve with stamped numbers and scratched writing. Found on The Thames. Any ideas what it’s from?

One side is stamped with the numbers 19374 and a capital A below it. The reverse edge is stamped with 11 / 51. Someone has scratched the letters LNE (or possibly LNE X) directly into the metal above the serial number.

Turns out it’s not just Giant Hogweed we need to worry about. Has anyone else had a run-in with this or any other "dangerous" plants? 🌱

So I was out metal detecting at the weekend. I never normally wear shorts but it was boiling. I walked through some weeds on this path to access the field and the time I got home, my legs looked like someone had thrown red paint on them.

It turns out “Common” Hogweed can also be problematic like its “Giant" cousin. The science behind it is really interesting. Apparently the sap contains furanocoumarins, which react with sunlight to apparently change your skins DNA so it can no longer protect itself from UV rays causing a chemical reaction that burns you. The technical name for this is Phytophotodermatitis.

I’ve been left with these purple/brown marks and will be wearing trousers from now on. Hopefully I won’t turn into a triffid! Has anyone else got any “dangerous” plant stories?

Phytophotodermatitis what UK plant caused it?

So I walked through some weeds on Sunday (side of a field in West Sussex), they lightly brushed on my bare legs. Soon after I had hives then later on red marks and now it just looks like someone has thrown purple paint all down my legs. Seems to be healing ok. I’ve never experienced something like this before and I find it fascinating that the plant has done this. I’ve heard of giant hogweed but it wasn’t that. I’m hoping to go back and try to identify it so I can keep away from it in future. I just wondered what other plants can cause this and would it happen to anyone who came into contact with it? I have allergies so wondered if that made it worse. I can post a photo but not sure if that’s allowed.
