How do you handle version control in Altium?
I'm working on a version control tool for Altium called RevTrace, and before I go much further with it I want to understand how people actually handle this now.
At the moment RevTrace supports both schematics and PCB documents. The idea is to have version control that understands Altium projects instead of treating them as opaque files.
I'm interested in how you currently work:
- Do you use Git, SVN, Altium 365, Concord Pro, manual backups, dated folders, or something else?
- What works well and what annoys you?
- Have you ever needed to compare two revisions of a schematic or PCB and found the existing tools lacking?
- Do you work alone or in a team?
- Would you actually use a local version control system made specifically for Altium?
- What would it absolutely need to do for you to bother using it?
I'm not trying to sell anything here. I'm mostly trying to figure out whether this solves a real problem outside of my own workflow, and what people would actually want from it.
I'm also interested in finding an investor or partner for RevTrace if there is enough demand. My current thinking is that the development cost for a tool like this is relatively low compared with the value it could provide to professional Altium users, so if the market is there, I think there could be a fairly short path to paying back the initial investment.
Also, slightly unrelated: I'm currently looking for work. I'm open to relocating pretty much anywhere and I'd be happy either to keep developing something like RevTrace inside a company or just work as an electronics/PCB engineer.
