Tips for helping a fear aggressive dog
I have a ACD/Catahoula that is 2 years old. He is very easily aroused, impulsive, and has multiple nips in his history. It is due to fear aggression. We are working with a trainer but I want to hear from others. He is super sweet with those of us in the household.
Trainer says to correct with e-collar or prong collar as he wears a 3mm prong collar. I feel bad when correcting but I also reward for favored behavior. Like if he looks and then disengages, follows through with a command, isn’t reacting. Am I doing this right?
Our daily enrichment schedule is starting the morning with a scatter feed, then is tethered to place for a few hours, and then maybe 2 hours in crate. After that we play structured fetch, for as long as he wants to play for. It’s really hot right now. We do it a couple times of day if we barely get any time in. Then he rests on place or in the crate for a few hours until dinner time. Then we work on impulse control or just some obedience for his dinner. The rest of his dinner is saved for our walk. It’s structured. He gets plenty of time to sniff.
Yes he is muzzled trained.
We are working on building his confidence up.
What has anyone had experience and success with? I’m open to anything. Thank you. I hope I didn’t leave any info out. But he is super easily highly aroused and that’s frustrating.
