Cali Octane Triploid for the win

It's been a tough late summer/early fall in SoCal with the El Nino. We had an extended spell of hot, humid weather that lasted from early August until earlier this week. I lost a great deal of product due to worms and bud rot...

Except for my HSC strain! The Cali Octane triploid proved to be extremely hardy and rot-resistant even under adverse conditions. Today is choppy chop day and I would estimate losing <5% to worm damage and very little bud rot. The buds are big, dense, and frosty, but the longer internodal distance between nugs prevented the spread from bud to bud, making problems much easier to control. This was easily my highest performing plant this year and I'm super stoked on how it came out. HSC for the win!

By the numbers:

Germinated 4/11/26 with 100% success rate (n = 4)

Grown in wine half-barrels with Fox Farm Ocean Forest. Top dressed several times with Dr. Earth and worm castings. I had a hard time keeping up with her appetite, and supplemented occasionally with FF Grow or Bloom liquid.

Grown outdoors 100% (post germ) with some supplemental light until late May, then just sun.

Harvested Oct 3-4th at peak ripeness. I buck and wet trim, then wash with 1% peroxide to kill any bugs/mold/etc.

Great end to a long season!

A Triple!

My first time seeing this mutation firsthand. Three nodes in thus far. I’m taking bets on when or if it will correct itself ♣️. Strain is Green Line auto, supposedly (white label freebies).

San Diego grow

San Diego, about 3 miles inland. This is the perfect distance from the beach to avoid too much marine layer, yet still be kissed by cooling ocean breezes. We had an unusually sunny late spring/early summer and experienced less "May grey" and "June gloom" than usual.

The plants in the beds are in well-amended soil and Dr. Earth fertilizer. The container plants are in Fox Farm Ocean Forest.

Current list:

  • California Octane triploid photo, Humboldt Seed Company, in half-barrel
  • GMO Oreos clone in raised bed
  • Bolo Runtz clone in raised bed
  • Skywalker x Crème de la Chem x Northern Cheese Haze auto, Mephisto freebie, raised bed
  • Figgy Runtz auto, Mephisto, raised bed
  • 505 Headbanger, Mephisto, raised bed
  • Guava Fig, Mephisto, raised bed

Harvested:

  • Commando'z auto, Mephisto
  • Mango Runtz auto, Mephisto
  • Banana OG auto, Humboldt Seed Company
  • Tropicana Cookies auto, white label

Comments:

Companion plants are marigolds, heirloom tomatoes, peppers, basil.

The Commando'z and Mango Runtz autos grew fine but were small. I noticed later that some of their strains they recommend for "micro grows", lol. I should have read more thoroughly. I wouldn't grow these strains again though, too small.

Tropicana Cookies was also smallish but created large dank colas (not pictured).

Banana OG auto was good sized and a heavy producer, nice buds with heavy aroma.

Cali Octane OG is super vigorous; a couple toppings and LST has produced a perfect globe shape. Untrained it would be pushing 10 feet by now!

It's nice to have a mix of autos and photos for variety.

The great outdoors in San Diego

San Diego coastal zone, about 2 miles inland. This is just perfect for the marine layer to burn off while still tickling the girls with cool ocean breezes. Raised beds were amended well with compost and other organics.

Banana OG auto from Humboldt Seeds is in the bed, and in the fabric pot is California Octane triploid from Humboldt Seeds. I've topped it once.

Banana OG auto is on Day 57 from sprout and began flowering later than expected. It's bigger than expected. She received a modicum of LST, not much.

California Octane Triploid is on Day 58 in a 5-gal fabric pot. I'll likely transplant it in a couple weeks.

Bed was amended with compost and worm castings. Plants have been given only plain water and compost tea, and they are healthy AF. It's my first time with autos and the Banana OG stalled as seedling due to overwatering, but recovered just fine.

I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions from other SoCal outdoor growers!
