Carney making a deal with Trump

We might have Keystone after all, friends.

So depressing. The NPD should organize around this symbolic issue.

No immediate referendum

This could secure the PQ électoral victory. Incidentally this is also excellent news for Carney.

Looking for opinions

So it's practically the electoral preseason in Québec and I wanted to ask : what are you looking for in these elections, at the provincial level ? Will C. Fréchette managed to save her party ? Is Charles Millard more than a poster boy for the Liberal Party ? Are you scared by the Livre Bleu of the PQ ? Will Duhaime get someone elected ? Will QS prioritize the independence movement or social economic issues ?

Do you want politicians to focus on climate/energy policy, as the government is looking to close its deal in Churchill Falls ? Are you interested in the many ways different parties are trying to solve the "homelessness issue" ? What about solving the concerning rise of bigotry (anti LGBTQ+ sentiment is on the rise) ? Or the secular laws ? Saving the cultural sector ? How will the youth vote ?

Do you believe the results could have an impact on A. Lewis efforts to familiarize himself with Quebec's electorate ?

I'm interested in everyone's opinion but especially of anyone who is not living in Quebec (which I assume is the majority here).

(You are entitled to not care at all.)

Good Sunday !

Has the left gone too far ?

Good (fairly basic) principled stance by Gilmore. Wouldn't be surprised if she got a negative reaction, so don't hesitate to support her ! I think she also makes a valid point about leftwing economic policies not being talked about enough in media and economic faculties.

Carney meeting the oil industry

1318 times ! It must be a record right ? (I don't know the numbers.) Trudeau looks like a green activist in comparison.

Hate crimes

Bunch of headlines that will inevitably get around, may as well put them here.

First link is about the raise of antisemitism on campuses. In the French version of the article you may find critics of the study : https://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/2026-08-05/selon-une-enquete-commandee-par-ottawa/les-etudiants-juifs-victimes-d-antisemitisme.php

At the same time, a judge allowed a class action against McGill for its failure to protect its Jewish students : https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/class-action-mcgill-jewish-students-protests-9.7297311

This goes in hand with hate crimes (racism, islamophobia, etc.) statistics going up : https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/hate-crimes-2025-hamilton-9.7278215

Antisemitism is a real thing. But one can be against antisemitism and criticize Israel policies and politicians. These are sensitive questions that have to be addressed with tact, not sweeping slogans.

The NPD has always been committed to fight antisemitism : https://www.ndp.ca/news/ndp-statement-release-ihra-handbook

Ukraine update #2

Not much, beside Russia killing more civilians and Ukraine changing some high level officers. Ukraine is lacking Patriot air defence systems but is trying to put up the fight by attacking Moscow and Putin's allies (Iran, basically all Russia's suppliers).

The propaganda around this war is weird. Maga influencers and Donald Trump, sensing they might have backed the wrong horse, are now pretending to cheer Ukraine. On the other hand, some extreme left wing influencers are trying to describe Ukraine as a new Israel (and present Ukraine as the belligerent for not abdicating its sovereignty in a forced peace deal).

The NPD has always strongly supported Ukraine and condemned the Russian genocide.

Just wanted to put an update, no post were made on the subreddit about the war since my last update, a month ago.

Enjoy your day !

Tragedy

Hopefully Carney, who found time to commemorate the death of a bootlicker (L. Graham), will reasserts his willingness to protect the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

(Beware, the NPD in Germany is the mirror opposite of the Canadian NPD.)

Governance and political ideology

Like many on this subreddit, I see Mamdani as a generational talent and a blessing for left wing politics. Since he took office, Mamdani has shown he gets things done (see Nathan J. Robinson's article on the topic).

Reading the lastest article of The Guardian on Mamdani's latest policies (see link) I asked myself if it was in the interest of Left wing politicians to repeat to the public they weren't necessarily enamored with the government. People (especially in North America) tend to associate "socialism" with "red tape". As a socialist, Mamdani is showcasing any good politicians is against cumbersome red tape.

I don't think there's any contradiction between Mamdani's socialism and his latest decisions. What do people think ?

Edit : What is the cumbersome 'red tape' the NPD could get rid of ?

Youth protesters celebrate after India's education minister resigns following exam leak scandal

Just a good daily reminder that social change is possible when what seems to be an organic movement dares challenge the government. I'm impressed by the youth.

Social democracy

We often talk here about the different shades of Left wing politics : social democracy, democratic socialism, communism, Anarchist Communism, etc.

Reading policies and listening to speeches, I was always under the impression the NPD was pretty much advocating for social democracy. This video makes a good plea for that.

I also think it's a good reminder we ought to be cautious, as authoritarianism runs free in the Right (and is arguably a core tenet of conservatism) and is (I want to say weirdly) on rise in the Left.

What do people think ?

Ukraine war update

Ukraine snatching momentum out of the jaws of defeat !

Since the beginning of the war the NPD has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine's war effort. I remember Lewis supporting Ukraine's right of self-determination (November 2025). Hopefully this is something everyone can get around !
