Why does Blood Meridian have to be so prominent in the discussion of Moby Dick?
I read Blood Meridian last year. I thought it was a beautifully written disgusting book, worthy of some thought, but Moby Dick it was not.
Being a male past the age where testosterone peaks may have tempered my experience. The violence felt gratuitous, taking away from the obvious writing talent on display.
I do think McCarthy used Moby Dick as a blueprint of sorts, but he distorted it to the point that it has the opposite effect on the reader.
Can we let Moby Dick exist outside of McCarthy’s monster?
