Are acronyms like MARVELOUS VFR C500 and SHARPTT just a load of baloney?

Hey guys.

We all know people love to hammer these acronyms but IMO they're not really that useful. For mandatory IFR reports, 91.183 only says

-compulsory reporting points when not in radar control (where even is this in the continental us anymore)

- unforecast wx

- safety of flight

And then everything else that people crammed into the long disgusting MARVELOUS acronym comes from the AIM (non-regulatory but best practice, yeah)

Am I really gonna tell ATC that my ETA changed by 3.5 mins? I feel like the rest of it is just common sense. Of course ill notify them when going missed. And same thing for SHARPTT (when not to fly a procedure turn) like all the things are just like WHEN IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO FLY IT.

Please forgive me if you're a fan of these acronyms. I'm just a hater of mindless memorization for the sake of it.

Authoritarian boss demands I ask permission before studying/crossword

Hi everyone,

I work in an entry level field temporarily while I finish up training to move into a specialized field that I'm passionate about.

When there's nothing to do at work, everyone just sort of sits around on their phones and there's only so long I can sit on my phone before going insane.

The other day I brought study materials and began reviewing them and this set my boss off. He freaked out saying I couldn't study without his permission. (Psychoanalysis tells me he's miserable stuck where he is and doesn't want anyone showing drive to get out)

Whatever, if that makes you happy I'll ask for permission but damn if that doesn't seem wrong to me. Like a humiliation ritual almost.

This happened with crossword puzzles too, I was reprimanded for doing those without his permission as well.

Anyway to get back at this D bag?

If I don't get hired at the flight school I trained at, is all hope lost?

Hey instructors,

I'm coming up on finally being finished. Hopefully will land an instructing gig at my school, if they so happen to be hiring.

I don't see a reason why they wouldn't want me, I've made good connections at the school and gotten through training smoothly. My nightmare scenario is that I've just invested all of this time, effort, and money for nothing to pan out and my school to tell me thanks but not right now.

From what I've read on this sub, and heard through the grapevine, CFI hiring is clogged up beyond belief. What was that Seth Lake video, something like 13,000 new CFI certs last year for around 4,000 jobs? And bear in mind, I only got my cert THIS year so I'm already behind all those folks.

I love flying, but the thought of not even being able to get my first instructing job has me worried. Should I go back to school and pivot careers? I can't sit around forever on hopes and dreams, I've got to make a life for myself somehow.

I'd appreciate any advice from those going through this right now or those more seasoned than me. I'm in a bit of a debbie downer mood reading about how tough it is out there.

Thanks everyone.
