Hi everyone. I’m spending some 10 days in Vietnam and 10 days in Taiwan this Sept/Oct.

I've done a lot of research and come up with itineraries for both. The problem is that I'm not feeling very inspired by the Taiwan portion of the trip...

In Vietnam I’m doing lots of cool activities such as a full day kayaking through a cave and swimming underground, a jungle exploring tour, a cooking class, boat ride down a river, sleeping on a train, cycling to mausoleums one day, ziplining, an outdoor dance show and I’m coinciding with a festival for several nights. I'll also be doing some things that are different for me as a foreigner such as visiting communist history sites, listening to "propaganda" loudspeakers, and so on.

But for Taiwan, I haven't managed to find the same breadth of unique experiences. I have a whale watching boatride one morning, a VR experience which will be like 30min, and maybe some indigenous performances or a show in Taipei, but that's about it.

Of course I don't want to repeat things, so if I'm cycling in Vietnam I don't need to go cycling in Chishang. I've thought of things like tea ceremony, sleeping in a temple, rafting, etc. but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I really want something that I've never experienced before, something that is really unique or might help me learn or see something new.

I'm sure Taiwan has more to offer beyond the typical sightseeing and I'm just not looking in the right places. I'm planning to do a loop of the island so any recommendations anywhere would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone! I'm going to Vietnam in September and would love an itinerary check to make sure it's sensible. It's my first time in Vietnam. The goal of the trip is mostly to see some of the more traditional sites (architecture), as well as some nice time in nature and visiting the caves.

Day 1: Afternoon arrival to Hồ Chí Minh

Day 2: Free day in Hồ Chí Minh. Night train departs around 20h

Day 3: Arrival Danang around 13:30 and bus to Hội An. Walk around old town (Chinese temple, Tan Ky house) + Lantern festival on this date 24th Sept

Day 4: Hội An cooking class (farm visit + market + cooking) OR Mỹ Sơn. Afternoon in Hội An (performance)

Day 5: Early bus/train to Hue. Full day in Hue, city centre (Imperial city, citadel, Royal Theater, Dien Tho Palace). Mid-Autumn Festival? (26th Sept). Homestay 3 nights

Day 6: Hue full day bike ride to mausoleums (Mid-Autumn Festival?)

Day 7: Hue (whatever I missed)

Day 8: Bus to Phong Nha, arrival around 12:30h. Zipline, boat ride, walk around town. Homestay 3 nights

Day 9: Phong Nha full day cave kayaking tour. I will book this while in Vietnam based on the weather, I don't want to be going into any caves if there is heavy rainfall.

Day 10: Phong Nha full day jungle + caving tour

Day 11: Vietnam War tour, tunnels, etc. (pick-up Phong Nha, drop-off Hue). Sleep in Danang, evening theatre if I arrive in time

Day 12: Danang Marble Mountains, afternoon flight to Taipei

Some questions:

  • Where to rent bikes in Hue?

  • Is Mỹ Sơn worth the visit? I love temples and history, but it's a bit of a hassle to get there and it seems like a small site.

  • What sort of events/performances will there be in Hue for the mid-Autumn festival? I haven't found much information on Mid-Autumn festival events, maybe it's still too early, but the dates should line up (Sept 24-25th in Hoi An, 26-28th in Hue)

  • Anything unique to do in Ho Chi Minh? I mean besides museums and temples. What's something truly unique to Vietnam that I might not have included in my itinerary?

Thank you everyone!
