2016 340i - Metal found in oil filter at 190,000km oil change
Hey all, just did my first service on my new to me 2016 340i and noticed some shavings in the filter. Appears to be non-magnetic. I understand that some specks here and there are ok but this seems excessive, even for a somewhat high mileage example.
The car has dealer service history up to 150k km which does unfortunately mean the oil was only changed every 30k, and was serviced at 182k before I bought it.
The only possible explanation I have for this is that around a month ago, I found my valvetronic motor was loose for whatever reason and only held in by being meshed with the eccentric shaft gear. I found it was secured in with bolts that were too long, likely causing them to back out. I think this may have let the motor shaft and eccentric shaft grind against each other hence the shavings. It was probably like this for around a month before I noticed it being an issue (car never threw a CEL, although found valvetronic related codes after scanning with ISTA)
I plan to change the oil filter within the next 1000km or so and inspect it for further shavings, hoping to spot little to none shavings, otherwise I suspect I may be cooked. If my theory is hopefully correct, would this likely have caused any significant permanent damage? Would appreciate any other suggestions or guidance as to what to do next.
