job asking for passport and driver’s license to “copy onsite”
hi! i’m undergoing a hiring process at a new job and they’re asking for a physical copy of my passport and driver’s license to “copy onsite”
can anyone who maybe hires people and does relevant background checks tells me exactly what the process that will be undergone? will they like have a machine that checks if the id is real? why are they keeping both of these ids? where do they go and how are they used? do i have to give them?
for context this is a receptionist position and thus doesnt require a driver’s license. the passport i can understand kinda ig to prove my worker’s rights but is both rlly necessary?
thank you!
edit: thank you for everyone's replies this is very helpful :) im getting a few mixed signals though so i thought i'd just ask if anyone could clarify - is it allowed for businesses to keep a copy of my passport and driver's license? and is it also allowed for me to refuse for a copy to be made, and prefer a sighting instead?
