Poly Daechi interview: 'Director' was an absolute tool and a time waster.

Yes another Poly School.

I had an online interview with this franchise, not actually knowing I was interviewing with a Poly until the 'Director' stated so (recruiter/middleman forwarded job). This was for a specific working time, which I had been very clear on from the beginning; was the main reason for my interest. Now I didn't say this in the interview, but it was advertised on these hours, and I had specifically given my reasons for why they suited me. Get to the interview and I ask some questions, one of which is to clarify what the schedule might look like on a regular day for me.

I am then asked if I could do extra on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. That would essentially be increasing my hours by an unagreed 30%.... hmmm. I say perhaps Mondays, and it was my intention to offer this perhaps down the line, but not the others due to my prior commitments specified already.

From this point on he vividly appears to lose interest, actually looking at his phone, texting, and leaving me in silence. He asks if I have any other questions, hardly looking up from his gormless face, and I ask if there's anything I can clear up or resolve from my end. He then looks at his screen and says something like 'oh yeah, I forgot to ask this question...' which was something inane that I now cannot even recall. To be honest, I just laughed at the end of it, and said bye. For the most part I read it as his weak experience in interviewing. At the beginning he was a bit all over the place and just threw in some real basic boring questions like 'where do you see yourself in 5 years' kind of thing. I had a minor hope I might get accepted, since I am desperate (why else would I subject myself to such riddicule).

But then I receive a response some 24 hours later that I was not successful on the grounds that I wouldn't do these extra shifts. I mean, what a complete waste of our time, due to their own lack of transparency. Imagine working there. That was supposed to be their most charming side.

Quitting rights and risks for this job

Ok I’m an f6 Visa and I’ve agreed to work in a hagwon, which I honestly don’t see myself staying in for long. it’s not a bad place, but there are a few things and circumstances which do not make this a long term prospect. I don’t think they even expect me to stay for more than six months anyway, however….

the main issue: on the contract it states that if I wish to leave I must either a) give three months notice (lol) or b) forgo a month salary if they cannot Find a replacement, and possibly pay for the recruiting fees. I think this is rather preposterous, but how likely is this and if I were to say, hand my notice in soon after being paid, would that be a sneaky way around it? Or do you think they would come after me?

Am I doomed to wait for job openings now until November/May?

I was desperate, because my current school closed down, and I had little time or options to look around.

I am very limited by my choice for a school, owing to my location, which I have to remain in; and I'm based near Incheon.

I have agreed to join a school which I really don't want to go to, because they're Prep/Kindy age. 8-5pm. I have been given 6 year olds, as a kind of homeroom teacher, supported by a Korean co teacher. The pay is ok, like 3.7, though I think I could have got 3.9. Even so, that's not exactly earth shattering. I'm just a bit too old for this age group, feel burnt out, and also know I'm diffefently qualified (Masters, Qualified teacher, 11 years experience covering between 10-20 years old). I'm F Visa too.

I just feel a real sense of dread...

I much prefer Secondary age, or even High School - University, but I know that is a little unrealistic given the scarcity and requirements of these jobs.

Do I just need to accept this, bite the bullet and wait it out, or will there be a slither of hope before August/September, you think?
