Welcome “Morning Dew” & Happy 20th Anniversary to B’Day & Thee Updo 📌
Happy 20th Anniversary to the B'Day Album & the Updo of My Dreams!
When the B’Day album came out, I was 18 years young, working at Circuit City (some of y’all don’t even know what that is). One night, my mom & I went to Walmart, & right near the entrance was a life-size cutout of Beyoncé with a stack of brand-new B’Day CDs. I looked at my mom & said, “This isn’t supposed to be out for another few days.”
At checkout, the cashier kept getting an error message & said he couldn't sell the CD to me. Apparently, they hadn’t even scanned them into their system yet. I hit 'em with the, “…May I speak to a manager, please?” 🥴 When the manager came out, they added the CD to the inventory, but the sale price wasn't in the system so that had to be overriden too. She was not happy.
By the time the album officially dropped, I knew 90% of it by heart. The first time I heard “Irreplaceable,” I knew it was going to be a pop phenomenon. But to this day, my favorite B’Day track is “Sugar Mama,” which flows flawlessly into my second favorite, “Upgrade U.” B’Day, & that updo, still holds such a special place in my heart.
Happy 20th anniversary to the album that brought me to what is still, in my opinion, the best Beyoncé tour: The Beyoncé Experience! Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it was Robin Thicke opening with his masterpiece, "The Evolution of Robin Thicke," maybe it was seeing them in my hometown with my big sister. But perhaps, it's because after seeing that show, I knew that Beyoncé was going to be one of the greatest performers of all time. I was right!
