Town is offering to cut down trees that are damaging sidewalk

We have 3 big sweet gum trees around our property, they are beautiful trees, but the dried nuts they produce are a tripping hazard and frustrating to clean up around the property.

Since the trees are uprooting the sidewalk, the town has told us we must pay to fix the sidewalk and they said they’d either cut the roots to fix the sidewalk OR completely take down the trees and replant a smaller one there.

We are debating what to do. The trees offer beautiful shade, but the sweet gum balls are horrible to deal with and we are concerned that the sidewalk may face another issue in the future and/or the tree may be weakened by the town cutting the roots. Either way the sidewalk has to be fixed.

Thoughts on taking the town up on the offer or keeping the trees?
