Hot Take: Classic Mode Should Impose a Laning System Similar to Ranked Games
Classic is supposed to be the go-to mode for practicing heroes, learning new roles, and enjoying less stressful games. However, one thing that has always bothered me is that it doesn’t emulate the basic role distribution that Ranked already has.
I’m not asking for Classic to become “Ranked without stars.” I still think it should remain the more casual mode where people can experiment and have fun. What I’d like to see is simply a lane assignment system that prevents obvious role conflicts.
Since Classic matchmaking is already much faster than Ranked, I don’t think players even need to select two preferred lanes. Choosing one preferred lane should be enough. The matchmaker can then distribute players so every team has one EXP, one Gold, one Mid, one Jungler, and one Roam. The goal isn’t to force a competitive meta, but to avoid situations where two EXP laners refuse to leave the same lane, two Gold laners fight over farm, or the team loads in with no jungler at all.
I also think Classic should contribute to lane mastery progression, but at a reduced rate. Something like 50% of the lane mastery progress that Ranked gives seems fair. If the purpose of Classic is to practice, then it makes sense for that practice to count, just not as much as Ranked.
Another important point is that lane assignment shouldn’t dictate hero choice. Unlike Ranked, I think Classic should still allow unconventional picks. If someone wants to play Miya Roam, Layla Jungle, or another off-meta combination, they should be free to do so. The system’s purpose is to ensure a fair lane distribution, not to tell players what heroes they can or can’t use. If people want to experiment, that’s completely in line with Classic’s identity.
For Jungle and Roam specifically, I’d also like to see a requirement that those assigned roles purchase their respective boots at the start of the game. Whether they later sell them, perhaps around the 12-minute mark for a sixth item, should be entirely up to the player. In fact, I think this requirement would make sense in Ranked too, since those boots are fundamental to how those roles function.
Overall, this isn’t about making Classic ultra-competitive. It’s about making it a better environment to practice the fundamentals you’ll actually use in Ranked while keeping the freedom to play unusual heroes and strategies. Right now, it’s difficult to properly practice laning, wave management, rotations, or role-specific decision-making when multiple players insist on occupying the same lane or when the team doesn’t even have a jungler.
I’d honestly rather lose because we got outplayed than because our team accidentally ended up with two EXP laners, two Gold laners, and nobody willing to jungle.
