I'm coming off hot from an insta post talking about the "is it cause you're bi and liking guys" lyric so excuse me if I sound heated. I'll try and keep it short

But like genuinely what's up with you guys??😭 like why do I keep seeing people complain about him being freaked out in his lyrics? He's BEEN freaked out so I just don't get it. To me the songs are telling a story or conveying Malcolm's current/past relation to love or maybe noting at all. Like Obsessica is such a good song I don't understand guys. Not to mention he's like 22 so yeah he's going to talk about sex

When Nothings About To Happen To Me dropped, as most albums do, it faced a ton of backlash (at least on this sub). Many fans complained about its country-type sound and compared to its singles prior saying that they expected something more alt or rock. However, this was refuted by the point that Mitski always does her album genres in " twos." This is a fair point, considering it is something she has done in the past.

However , I don't think the problem with the album is the songs, but the singles that were chosen to be released for album rollout. Where's My Phone and I'll Change For You don’t remotely sound country. They didnt reflect the album at all. The two singles also have a strong dichotomy giving the album a lack of a strong image (Although, Mitski's brand in the past is more aligned with those songs despite their differences). I think this caused many people to believe that "old" Mitski was coming back. These fans would be highly disappointed to receive an entirely new Mitski.

TL;DR: NATHTM's is not a bad album by itself. But because of its contradictory image and expectations, fans were left dissatisfied.
