Aloof puppy?

Nine month old puppy (whippet/bedlington). Very chilled dude (although being a bit of a teenage dirtbag at the moment).

I've had and known lurchers before and found all of them to be pretty soppy and cuddly, especially males. Our lad is very aloof - totally happy on his own, would almost never come and curl up beside us on the sofa. Sometimes affectionate (licks, enjoys scritches and pats) and otherwise seems a content and happy dog. I just don't really feel like his person, I think he could take us or leave us to be honest!

Is this more likely an age or a breed thing? I never wanted a clingy or needy dog, but a bit of affection would be nice!

When is temperament/vibe set?

Our beddy-whippet (75% whippet, so please can I be an honoury member of this board?) is 7.5 months old.

He is, generally speaking, an angel - he's asleep with his legs in the air most of the time, rarely barks, walks beautifully on a lead, greets other dogs nicely, recalls well (mostly, sometimes he switches his ears off). Of course, he still has his moments of being a little bugger, and is often overflowing with puppy exuberance, but so far he's a very easy and chilled out little dude.

He's had a few teenage-y days and I know he'll go through several more phases and stages until he's fully mature, but when can I relax a bit and breathe a sigh of relief that we have ended up with a very docile, calm little dog? Could he still turn into a nightmare, or is personality fairly well established by now?
