Grading 1977 Star Wars series 1 cards?
Looking for advice: I don't trust the grading companies.
I have 80+ first series 1977 Star Wars cards in good shape. Heritage recently hit new highs auctioning these, with a PSA 10 card #1 Luke Skywalker hitting $685K, others $5K - $200K. I'd like to get a few graded, but all I hear is horror stories about PSA, CGC, and Beckett, though not so much about TAG except they're new. PSA has scandals and insane upcharges, they all have people complaining about a year wait even after paying expedite rate, also damaged cards, inconsistent grading, ZERO communication, etc. Word is a ten from CGC or Beckett is as good as a PSA10, but anything lower and you lose 15% min on sale price. PSA is "the Man" at auction but scares me the worst. TAG uses AI grading and seem super consistent and maybe most reliable (and maybe the future of grading) but is new and relatively unknown among auction buyers (and maybe a waitlist now?) My plan was to go Beckett but then I read a couple dozen scary reviews. Are the reviews really in the minority? BIG Q: WOULD YOU RISK SENDING OFF some cards that might realistically auction easily for $2K - $5K apiece and some have a true (though slim) shot at 5 to 6 digits and risk them going lost for a year (or forever)? Have you? HOPE ME! What's a po' ol' geek to do?
