Why do companies struggle with ERP even after spending so much on it?

I’ve spent years managing ERP & IT operations. I’m now trying to solve a problem I kept seeing.

After years of working around ERP systems, finance processes, support teams and business users, I noticed something that kept repeating:

Companies don't necessarily have a software problem.

They have a “we're not getting enough out of the software we already have” problem.

I've worked with multiple ERP systems, development/support teams, vendors and business stakeholders. At one point, I was coordinating 20+ concurrent initiatives and managing support across several ERP environments.

And the patterns were surprisingly consistent:

Businesses using spreadsheets alongside their ERP for things the ERP could handle.

Teams buying customizations before understanding the actual process problem.

Users calling everything “critical” because there was no clear prioritisation.

Knowledge sitting with one or two people instead of being documented.

Support teams closing tickets without necessarily fixing the underlying process.

Management wanting dashboards, while the underlying data/process wasn't clean enough to trust.

Companies paying for ERP functionality they weren't actually using.

This is part of the reason I've started working on R-NX.

The idea isn't to sell another giant transformation project.

It's to start much more practically:

Understand the business → identify the gaps → use the ERP properly → automate where it makes sense → customise only when necessary.

We're initially focusing on the Odoo ecosystem because I think there is a particularly interesting opportunity there, especially for growing businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets/Tally/basic systems but aren't ready for huge enterprise implementations.

I'm still early in this journey, so I'm genuinely curious:

For those of you running or working in SMBs, what has been your biggest ERP headache?

Is it implementation?

Poor adoption?

Reporting?

Integrations?

Support?

Customisation?

Or simply not knowing what your ERP is actually capable of?

I'd rather learn from real experiences than build another consulting company based on assumptions.

Help me escape a toxic job

Having quit a toxic job, I’m aiming to build some useful products. This is me validating with this wonderful community if you would use something like this?

The idea is an app aimed at new creators on YouTube to automatically edit their videos with end screen, update with comments and update any missing keywords.

Thank you for your time.
Mods- hope it’s not breaking rules, just looking for expert views and opinions.

App Idea Feedback Help

Hi,
Would love perspective from experts on an app idea. The app will find right keywords for a specific service, compare with competitor pages and rank markers- GMB, service page,AI coverage and generate a report.
Aimed for agencies or small businesses with digital marketing teams. Would be grateful to know if this a problem worth solving.
Mods: Hope I’m not breaking rules, I’m going broke and want to simply ask feedback from experts. Don’t cancel me. Here’s a peace offering: 🍩

I built a plugin for my site that creates AI tools with bring-your-own-ai-key and HTML. Perhaps suitable for bloggers and creators running WP sites. Would love some advice from this expert community if this sort of thing might be useful. Thanks for your time.

Mods- hope this isn’t breaking any rules.
