Dual Citizens: Which Passport Do You Use Most When Traveling to Mexico?🇲🇽🇺🇸

For those who already have both U.S. and Mexican citizenship, I’m curious about your real-world travel routine.

When you travel to Mexico, do you carry both passports?

Do you use one for the airline and another for immigration, or do you have a different system?

Have you ever had an airline employee or immigration officer ask questions because you presented two passports?

I’m not looking for a textbook answer — I’d love to hear how people actually handle it when traveling.

Never worked in Mexico. Can I still enroll in IMSS just because Im a citizen?

I’m U.S./Mexico dual now, but I’ve lived and worked in the U.S. my whole life. I’m starting to think seriously about spending a few months a year in Mexico and healthcare is the part I don’t understand.

I keep seeing IMSS mentioned, but most explanations seem to assume you already work for a Mexican employer or have paid into the system. If you’re a Mexican citizen who has never worked in Mexico, can you enroll voluntarily, or do you basically need private insurance until you’re employed there?

Would really like to hear from someone who was U.S.-based first and figured this out later.
