I have a friend living in a building that her landlords are not going to continue to maintain. She needs to stay for now, though, and I offered to remove an old chimney in her roof that leaks in the winter. (When I took it apart, I discovered the roofing screws holding down the improperly installed chimney boot were taped over with packaging tape...)

On the property, we found a scrap of the same profile of metal roofing, and I am wondering if the best repair solution in this circumstance (where the landlords will not properly fix the roof) is to slip this roofing patch underneath the existing roofing, or if I should instal it on top?

I was originally thinking to put the patch on top, with two lines of high strength marine grade caulking (5200) around the entire perimeter, screw it on with roofing screws, and also apply a diagonal line of caulk above the patch on the original roofing to divert as much water as possible away from the new seam.

However, I'm now wondering if I should not put the patch underneath, and caulk all around the recessed edge.

I still lean toward putting it on top, but curious what others think.

I accidentally. made holes in my friends' nice braided rug, and I have a lot of scrap fabric with which I can almost-match the colours, but I cannot figure out what they did here. Is anyone able to describe what kind of braid this is or find a diagram of how the weave works?

I don't need to make the repair perfect/ seamless, I just want to do the best job I can repairing it.
