The Curious Case of Luigi Mangiones PR Strategy

Luigi Mangione's defense team's PR strategy has been a mystery from the start. Karen Friedman Agnifilo was retained on December 13/14, 2024, while Luigi was still incarcerated in Altoona, PA. On December 19, he was flown to NYC following an extradition hearing and – after his infamous perp walk – was federally indicted on the same day. Four days later, he entered a not guilty plea in NY state court on December 23.

 Karen embraces the fans

By the first week of January 2025, several TikTokers (Jason Brooks, DJ Morris, Renegade for Justice, etc.) already told their viewers that they had been in touch with Luigi's team over email and phone.

To quell skepticism and convince people that this really happened, some of these wannabe influencers even shared their conversations with the defense team, e.g., Jason Brooks posted the below on the FL sub (original post here).

Despite all these screenshots, some Luigi supporters still didn’t want to believe that the defense team for one of the most high-profile defendants in the nation would really chitchat with a convicted felon who spent over a decade in prison for securities fraud, something Jason is very open about and, in fact, told Karen about.

But when #sockgate rolled around, even the skeptics had to concede that Luigi's team was indeed in direct contact with fans. Sockgate was coined as such after the NY state prosecution informed Judge Gregory Carro that before Luigi's 2/21/2025 NY arraignment

“Major Mike McKee, a New York State Court Officer assisting in defendant's transport, was given a bag of clothing for the defendant by members of the defense team. Investigator Sgt. Louis Capolupo was charged with searching the clothing. Among the items of clothing was a new pair of argyle socks wrapped around cardboard. Secreted in the cardboard were two personal heart-shaped notes, one addressed to an unknown person named "Joan" and the other to Luigi, stating in part "know there are thousands of people wishing you luck. Despite this, the defendant was permitted to wear the argyle socks, which he first changed into and later changed out of because he felt that "they did not look  good." Fortunately, the items smuggled were handwritten notes and not contraband capable of harming the transporting officers.”

The heart-shaped notes story became international media fodder, with all major news outlets picking it up. The recipient “Joan” was suspected to be Joan Vollero, who is contracted as Comms Director for the Agnifilo Intrater law firm and who declined to comment on the story.

Since the notes were found, state prosecution has never allowed him again to change into civilian clothing in NY state court. He is now dependent on Judge Garnett to sign off on changing into civilian clothing at MDC Brooklyn, which is under federal and thus Judge Garnett's jurisdiction.

The heart-shaped notes handed the state prosecution an excuse on a silver platter to deny Luigi civilian clothes, as they were previously very unhappy with his clothing choices, lamenting in a motion that “Notably, the defense ensured that defendant was furnished with a green sweatshirt to wear, consistent with what his sympathizers were calling for supporters to wear at his calendar appearance. In addition, defense counsel addressed reporters outside the courthouse, before a group of Mangione supporters, ironically repeating and reinforcing the very acts of law enforcement she claimed to prejudice her client.”

Karen Friedman Agnifilo also followed and interacted with numerous fan accounts in the first half of 2025. Granted, it could have been an intern, legal assistant, or press person running her socials, but the optics are the same. A defense attorney following someone with the handle u/CEOslayer is crazy, but fortunately she seems to have wisened up since then and stopped the questionable likes. She still follows some Luigi accounts but has distanced herself from the worst ones, and hey, at least AntiTrumpCanada is also on her following list.

Luigi's letter campaign

Whether the many letters Luigi wrote between December 2024 and August 2025 (the last time a letter was shared publicly) were part of an active PR strategy remains debated. On one hand, letters like the one to a mother of a sick child arguably serve as good publicity. But others, like the one to Holli Lambirth, where he joked about being arrested for eating a hashbrown and discussed fan merch, perhaps not so much. The sheer number of letters also made it easy to attribute fake letters to Luigi, which became such a problem that his team had to address it on his website.

Writing letters to supporters in the pre-trial phase is a huge risk, as anything defendants discuss with those outside their legal team can be used against them in a trial. It would strain common sense that a seasoned PR team would encourage their client, who faced the death penalty and terrorism charges at that time, to make any commentary to strangers about their arrest. I really can't wrap my head around that this was sanctioned by Luigi's team, and I may be off, but I conclude that he wrote the one-to-one letters of his own accord.

I feel similarly about the short story (Tales from the MDC – The Meddler) that Luigi sent to dozens of strangers. In what world would it be smart for someone charged with murder and terrorism to send out a story where he crushes a cockroach to death when it is alleged he called the victim a parasite in his notebook writings???

But the birthday letter appears part of a coordinated PR campaign to me. The drawing of an equivalence between political parties screams deliberate; all the thank-yous to supporters and expressions of gratitude to friends, family, lawyers and even correction officers look like a well-thought-out PR tactic. It is a polished letter and sounds less authentic to me.

As I am certain Luigi and his team anticipated, the birthday letter was covered in the media, unlike most of his other fan exchanges (bar the Karen letter). Sending it out to 80+ people practically guaranteed that at least some of them would publicize it and generate some much-needed positive publicity: “Oh look, dad, Luigi loves Ayn Rand just like Trump. He can't be that left-wing.”

The Feds too picked up on the courting of supporters, which they called out in their memorandum of law in opposition to the defendant's motion for an informal outline of certain aggravating factors, pointing out that:

“Following his arrest, the defendant openly cultivated supporters. He has set up a website, on which he has directly addressed his supporters, and which includes a section for FAQ with questions like “May I send him items like books?” “Can I send Luigi photos?” and “What else can I send LuigiThe same website contains scanned images of an index—prepared by the defendant himself—exhaustively cataloguing all of the supportive letters he has received.”

In their reply to the memorandum, the defense denied the accusations and wrote that

“Since his arrest and predating the launch of this website more than two months later, Mr. Mangione has received thousands of unsolicited letters from all over the world. This outpouring of support has created an understandable backlog for the Bureau of Prisons, causing Mr. Mangione to often receive letters months after they were sent. A frequently asked question to counsel is whether Mr. Mangione has received a particular correspondence. To address this backlog issue, a simple mail catalogue was created to inform the people who take the time to write to Mr. Mangione so they can see whether their letters were read.”

But this is only partially true. Yes, Luigi received and still receives many unsolicited letters, but he also proactively encouraged the letters. Aside from publishing a letter log, which acts as a motivating factor to writers (after all, knowing that your letter actually made it is a stronger incentive to write than not knowing), he directly asked letter writers to send further correspondence, e.g., he asked Karen to send a photo, and he asked Natalie to send another painting of him. He also told some supporters that they are welcome to write as often as they like.

It was also he who initiated a correspondence with Patrick Bet-David, whom he knows is a public figure and who had previously spoken negatively about him on his podcast. Luigi and his team knew that writing a flattering two-page letter to someone who makes a living by talking to an audience always carried the risk of coming out. So I can't help but conclude that this was a calculated move to build some rapport with a conservative commentator and use him as a mouthpiece to garner more sympathy with Conservatives.

The good, the bad, the invisible mouthpieces

Unsurprisingly, this didn’t sit well with many of Luigi's supporters who are largely progressive women, and Luigi himself acknowledged this. It would be easy to dismiss Luigi's letter to PBD as just another complimentary message he sent to a conservative male with somewhat of a following, which he has a history of. But Patrick let slip that he had a one-hour (!) call with three of Luigi's lawyers. It is this tidbit that gave me pause and made me think that something is brewing here. Is Patrick being lined up to receive exclusive content or Luigi's first interview after the trial? Why else would three high-paid lawyers who charge an hourly rate of hundreds of dollars have a long phone call with a right-wing podcaster about their client?  I am open to hearing other suggestions!

Who is paying for this? It is such strange behaviour from seasoned lawyers, and I am not sure what is worse: a press person who ok-ed this or lawyers who may have ignored their PR advisor?! What I do know is that it would be a wasted effort to invest money and time into any PR tactics aimed at influencing the opinion of conservatives on Luigi's alleged action. That is futile and could potentially even backfire and alienate some of his liberal fanbase. Bad PR move.

Another thing that baffles me is Joan Vollero's actual role. Joan has been a partner at ICR, a Strategic Communications and Advisory firm, since 2023. She is not an official employee at Agnifilo Intrater, and it appears that she has just been hired on a retainer basis to help out with litigation comms, which is common for firms that lack their own in-house PR team. Joan and Karen used to work together for years during their time at the Manhattan DA's office, where Joan was Communications Director.  She was cited as the very first spokesperson for the Luigi case on December 14 2024, but since then has taken a backseat publicly.

Any statements issued on behalf of Luigi come from Karen Friedman Agnifilo without exception. But Joan is still there and has accompanied Luigi's legal team to several of his court hearings, including his most recent June hearing. If she isn’t acting as a public spokesperson, what is she doing? The most sensible answer would be that she is pulling the strings behind the scenes, and oversees the PR strategy.

Yet I am not convinced at all that there is a fully developed PR plan in place as I can't spot any tailored messaging and many statements are being pushed out rather delayed (thinking of the Shein AI story, the Luigi porn rumors, and the alleged damaging statement made by Luigi's mother, which were left completely unaddressed by Luigi's team for months and were printed everywhere and repeated non-stop for ages).

This leaves me to believe that Joan is primarily providing reactive PR counsel. That she acts as an adviser and sounding board to Karen and tells her when to issue statements and when not and when to address journalists outside court. Just my thoughts. But why was she not on the call with PBD? It is normal for PR people to sit in on these calls with media. O Joan, where art thou?

Another interesting part of the Agnifilo Intraters media handling is their utilisation of Mark Geragos to discuss Luigi. Both Karen Friedman Agnifilo and Marc Agnifilo have strong ties to Mark Geragos. Karen left the Manhattan DA's office in 2021 to join Mark at his firm, Geragos Global. It was the firm that she was willing to leave public service for after a decade-long career as a prosecutor. Mark's daughter Teny doesn’t only work at Agnifilo Intrater; she is a founding partner and, by the looks of it, has a very close relationship with Marc.

Mark Geragos is a prolific legal commentator, and he is often invited by media outlets to provide analysis. While he has never made a secret about his daughter's employment, it is not mentioned in most of his interviews, and casual viewers are unaware of his association with the defense team. So when he talks about how prosecuting Luigi in different jurisdictions is unfair or that the Feds couldn’t wait to get to Luigi, most viewers perceive him as an impartial party when he is not. He has a vested interest in Luigi's case because a negative outcome may impact his daughter's business. Making any disparaging comments will likely also not sit well with Marc, Karen, and Teny and could strain their relationships.

Out of all PR tactics I have observed, having Mark on board and leveraging his media profile to spread favorable or at least neutral commentary about Luigi is the defense's smartest play. It is the only element of their PR strategy that I think has worked really well. But the irony isn’t lost on me that this is because the defense team is not directly associated with it.

Of course, most defendants don’t have their own PR person because they aren’t public people. Things with Luigi are different, and I understand that Agnifilo Intrater thought it would be sensible to have an experienced communications professional on hand to tackle media queries and provide PR counsel.

But the execution just doesn’t seem to translate well when looking at the sum of it: the EED disaster, the active engagement with fan accounts, messaging and calling right-wing podcasters, scheduling calls with convicted felons who live on TikTok, very delayed responses to alleged false NYPD statements, lack of distancing from unhinged groupies for months, weird short story letters, and so on. But the clearest sign that Luigi's PR strategy needs an overhaul is that it has caused him problems in court, including in a memorandum about the death penalty, which couldn’t be more serious. Stories like sockgate could have been easily prevented, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
