I am floored
We had a major flooding on our street today, and 2ft of water made it into our garage (pictured) and basement. We were not home when it happened so we were unable to save anything.. my car in our driveway drowned, all of my kids toys (the basement was their playroom), everything is soaked and nasty... washer/dryer fried, hvac/ac no longer working... and we dont have flood insurance as we dont live in a flood zone. Never had an issue like this before, where we thought we may need that. Anyways, I am so shaken by it all, I havent even been able to cry... I dont even know where to begin to get our life back together 😭 I am normally a very neat and organized person, I keep our home tidy and this is giving me so much anxiety now... the financial losses, the sentimental losses, the potential contaminants in our home... I dont think I'll be able to sleep at all tonight. Any advice helps...
Edit 7/5/26: THANK YOU ALL FOR THE KIND WORDS AND ADVICE. I'm so sorry for anyone that's had to deal with this before. Its horrible. We are in Woodridge for context. Our house smells musty this morning, all the home depots are clear out for miles of dehumidifiers - we managed to borrow a few from neighbors and friends. Setting them up now along with fans and sealing off the downstairs completely. We called a restoration company, they are coming in 4-8pm because they are also slammed with requests. Cant get to insurance because they are experiencing high call volume (no option to speak to anyone, just says call later and hangs up). So my husband will proceed to rip off and remove the carpet now that most of the water is out and pile everything on our driveway until a dumpster arrives sometime this coming week to prevent further damage inside.. I've come to terms that all the kids stuff is lost, but we'll manage to rebuild everything in time... lesson, get backup insurance for water damage even if you dont think you need it people!!!
