Advice
I’m going into my senior year next year and have been a proud member of my school’s marching band since 8th grade. Ever since freshman year, I’ve thought being drum major would be an awesome experience, and I feel like I have the leadership skills and musicianship for the position.
At the same time, I really love marching and playing trombone, and I don’t want to give that up. My band director told me I’m definitely qualified and would be one of the strongest choices for drum major, but he also said taking me off the field would be a big musical loss for the band. Typically though, in my band woodwinds are drum majors, although my band is smaller and there might not be anyone else that will audition, so there is a chance I'm guaranteed the spot.
So now I’m stuck between the opportunity to lead as drum major or continue to march and perform with my section. I’d appreciate any advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation.
