NyxNiri v2.3.0 — Material You desktop config for Niri + Noctalia V5 on Arch/CachyOS.

WM: Niri (Wayland scrollable-tiling compositor)
Shell: Noctalia V5 — pulls Material You colors directly from the wallpaper; an mpvpaper + ffmpeg hook extracts frames so live/video wallpapers generate palettes too
Terminal: Kitty, with custom cursor trails
Shell/Prompt: Fish + Starship
Editor: Zed
Extras:

  • Eye Care Mode — warmer color temp, zero blur, opaque windows for reading sessions
  • M3-style radial menu (apps/tools/web links, all TOML-configurable)
  • Persistent Kitty scratchpad terminal
  • fcitx5 skin that re-renders to match the current theme on wallpaper/mode change

I'll soon add an video in English. This video shows the appearance,built-in cli tools and install steps

Sharing a desktop config bundle I've been building on top of Niri and Noctalia V5.

Highlights:

  • Material You color extraction from wallpaper — including video wallpapers, via an mpvpaper + ffmpeg hook
  • Light/dark sync (GTK/GSettings follow Noctalia automatically)
  • nyxniri CLI for install/snapshot/rollback/doctor — updates won't wipe your personal tweaks (*__custom__* files/folders are preserved)
  • Eye Care Mode, dynamic fcitx5 skin, Fish/Kitty tweaks

Anyone else struggling to make my Niri desktop look "just right"?

https://preview.redd.it/8wcsm76sz4bh1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=f98b5544aaf83500362f5689092ef27b2d042ebd

I've tried almost every Niri shell I could find (DMS, Noctalia v4, INIR, etc.), but I still can't get my desktop to look the way I want.

My biggest issue is the bar. In most shells, the bar's blur is tied to the window blur settings, so I can't tune them independently. If I make the windows look good, the bar looks off. If I make the bar look good, the windows end up looking wrong.

I'm also never quite satisfied with the bar's rounded corners, shadows, or spacing. It always feels like something is slightly off.

I actually like INIR the most aesthetically, but the animations don't feel as smooth as I'd expect (I'm running a 2K 180Hz monitor with an RTX 4070 Ti), and Chinese text rendering looks a bit blurry.

At this point I'm wondering whether I should just keep tweaking my current setup or start from scratch with something else.

Does anyone have similar aesthetic preferences? If so, I'd love to see your configs, screenshots, or dotfiles. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
