Living room fence?

My partner and I are in the preliminary stages of fixing up this 1963 ranch thats been in his family and hasn’t been touched or lived in for years. What are your thoughts on this custom gate thing that separates the two main living areas? There’s a lot of mid century charm here but we want to know why they put it here and if it was common lol please excuse the mess, like I said, has not been touched in years.

Cleaning out a family member’s 1963 Ranch

My partner and I are starting to clean out his great grandparents house so we can fix it up and move in. It’s like a time capsule frozen in 1963. Not everything is in the best shape, but I figured people on here would appreciate it. This is the first thing I found that I thought could be something worth saving and fixing up. A Lane cedar hope chest. Should I try to sell it or keep it?
