Many thanks to the entire community for all the Nikon tips. Thanks to you, I decided to move up from the Z50 and ordered a Z5 II with the Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens and I couldn't be happier with the results.

I couldn't decide between the Z6 III, Z5 II, Tamron 28-75 G2, Nikkor 28-75, Nikkor 24-120, etc. It’s not exactly an easy choice given the huge range of products - especially since it’s a significant investment and you don’t want to end up disappointed.

Here are a few snapshots from when I briefly tested the camera around the house. Sraight out of the camera, no editing.
Ps. I am just a hobby photographer.

You guys inspire people!

Soft photos at 300mm (Tamron 18-300 + Nikon Z50)

Hi everyone,

I’m a hobbyist photographer (!still learning!) and want to get the absolute best out of my current setup.

I know the Tamron 18-300mm is a superzoom and won't perform like a $4,000 professional telephoto lens. But I’ve seen incredibly sharp photos online taken with this exact lens, which makes me think my settings or technique are holding me back. My shots at 300mm currently look quite soft and "smooth" instead of crispy sharp.

Info: The RAW files were edited in Lightroom, but I was very careful with the settings so that the result wouldn't look worse.

What can I do to improve?

  • Are there specific Z50 autofocus settings I should use?
  • Could this just be atmospheric haze?

Any tips or advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My typical settings for these shots:

  • Camera: Nikon Z50 (APS-C)
  • Lens: Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3
  • Focal Length: 300mm (450mm equivalent)
  • Settings: 1/1000s | F/8 | ISO 200
  • Shot handheld, AF-C
