Is MENU 290 a GPA Killer?

hey all. I received an invite to take MENU courses my freshman year and I'm specifically interested in the 290 sequence (not specifically 291).

although MENU's objective compells me and I enjoy math overall, I'm worried that the course will be worse for my GPA than the regular 230 sequence, especially after adjusting for more study hours. that is because of the opportunity cost of extra study when I could be doing research/socializing/clubs, not neccesarily due to more math.

for those who took 290 or are familiar with the course: how is the GPA and study hours situation in comparison to 230? Thanks!

Math 230 vs 228

hey everyone. i'm trying to figure out which multivariable calc sequence I should take (i'm in weinberg but transferring to mccormick and obtained permission for 228), and was wondering what are the major differences between Math 228 (-1/-2) and Math 230 (-1/-2)?
since I can technically take either, how much do the syllabi, difficulty, content, focus or teaching styles actually differ in practice? Is one considered significantly harder or more/less of a GPA killer than the other? does only 230 have a reading week for finals?

ty :)

can undergrads interact in kellogg in any way besides CPU?

hello all. im a prospective applicant and was wondering if, besides the certificates, undergrads can interact with kellogg via facilities, study spaces, research centers, seminars and/or workshops, events, networks, grad courses, case competitions, entrepreneurship or other means.

thank you!

Math placement test results question

hello everyone. im from the uk and got A* in A-level maths which gives 2xx credit but not a specific placement. my placement gave me "inconclusive", stating that i mastered integration but not derivatives and/or precalculus. however, i feel confident in all three.

i was wondering if i am allowed to enrol in multivariable given my circumstances.

cheers

can i NOT take Weinberg seminar?

when i applied to northwestern for psychology i didnt know that, to double major with industrial engineering, i had to be in mckormick.

although unfortunately it's too late to change school before the fall, i was wondering if i can not take the weinberg seminar as the class does not count towards any mccormick or major requirement.

i would rather graduate early with my ap credits as finances are an issue for me. thankss :)

Physics labs Study abroad

Hey all. I was wondering whether the 136 physics labs are waived or still have to be completed if I complete courses equivalent to 135 during a potential study abroad. Thanks!

Denied inter-school transfer

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming Northwestern freshman and I’m really confused about my situation.

I was admitted to Weinberg, but after learning more about Northwestern’s structure, I realized that if I want to combine a social science major with engineering, McCormick needs to be my home school. This interdisciplinary path was one of the main reasons I chose Northwestern.

I submitted a request to switch from Weinberg to McCormick around mid-late may. In my request, I emphasized my interest in engineering and in combining social sciences and engineering as well as my extensive quantitative preparation, my extracurriculars and preparation for engineering coursework and also why Northwestern’s interdisciplinary environment specifically fits my goals.

(By the way, my original major is extremely more popular at NU than the one I'm transfering to with 250 majors per class vs 15)

However, after waiting about two months, my request was denied with no explanation. ("Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your request at this time." was all they stated.)

What confuses me is that I have heard from multiple upperclassmen and other students that Weinberg to McCormick pre-matriculation transfers are usually extremely straightforward. I also know incoming freshmen who were approved with "minimal effort", which makes me wonder what factors actually determine these decisions.

My concern is that if I start in Weinberg and transfer later, I will have to take Weinberg-specific requirements that do not apply to McCormick while missing first-quarter McCormick courses and prerequisites. This will delay my academic progression and cost thousands of dolars.

Why can't I be approved now with a genuine reason and the qualifications?

Is this freshman course schedule good or too light?

I was thinking about adding a 4th course but worried that the start of freshman year and transition to college could make it too overwhelming:

-Programming for Engineers 150
-DTC 1
-Multivariable Differential Calculus for Engineering 228-1

Thinking about adding:
-Intermediate Microeconomics 1 310-1
-Physics: Mechanics 135-1 + Lab 136-1

Would adding one of the above courses be excessive?
