How common is it to live with the in-laws?

I married my Japanese husband 3 years ago. He is the oldest son and made it clear when we met that he was expected to stay with his parents and care for them.

The whole setup hasn't been easy so far, particularly after our children were born.

My husband says this is very common in Japan and insists families live happily like this.

From my western point of view this is a hard disagree... what is the truth?

Consulate/Embassy Question

I have a terrible relationship with my family back in my home country. Today I asked for no more contact moving forward via WhatsApp. My mother called me many times (though I didn't answer) and threaten to contact the consulate/embassy in Japan to report me missing and request a wellness check on me.

This threat is very manipulative in my opinion which made me even more upset about the whole situation and after a last message saying I do not wish to be contacted again, I blocked them.

I have 3 citizenships but I am only registered in 2 consulates in Japan. I already contacted one of them via e-mail giving them a heads up not to reveal any personal information about my whereabouts. The other embassy is the American one but there is no e-mail contact I could locate on their website.

I will try to call tomorrow too but I just want to make sure, if anyone out here has had a similar crazy experience, could you share how the consulates handled those types of calls/reports?

Is there anything in particular I could do to make sure there are no mistakes and no personal information is given to them over the phone or otherwise?

I have 2 children they don't know about and I really don't want that information or other important information to be known by them.
