Got laid off after sitting for the CA bar exam 🥺

Help me feel better… I was an accountant for four years at a nonprofit that promoted social justice. When I sat for the bar, I had already asked for vacation time to study and take a test. A week later my whole accounting firm (all women) ignored me and gave me the cold shoulder. My boss didn’t speak with me, she would even take a detour not to say hi to me in the building. And then I got fired on a spot two days ago… they told me they couldn’t afford me in the budget and that they had eliminated my position 😡 I built a very close relationship to the clients and colleagues. I experienced major life changes during my tenure so I guess I’m very appreciative of their flexibility. I was so happy about taking the bar and optimistic that I maybe passed because I knew every subject matter tested! Now I feel small again 🥺 I’m a single mom of 5, just bought a home in the Bay Area, and do not have anyone that supports me or my children. I just overcame DV and I’m still dealing with PTSD. I felt my work completely betrayed me by silent competition. I can’t afford to take a break from work. I wish we knew the results asap! Pray for me.

I feel like I passed

OK, so everybody is posting about how the bar exam was extremely challenging, and that they possibly didn’t pass? Am I the only one feeling like maybe I passed ? I feel very low key scared to post this. I might get attacked for being positive 😭 This was my very first time taking the bar. I’m also an older law student that just graduated! But I felt like I did really well I went out smiling…but my back was hurting so bad lol.

So I went to law school that was taught by judges and lawyers. They taught how to format and issue spot every week, and I used their essay approach for the exam. I also bought Mary Basicks books, and I just printed a whole bunch of prior essays and study the hell out of the issues. I also studied the patterns of what was tested every year, and luckily all the subjects that I studied was on the exam this week 🥹 but essay 3 was super wild.

I really don’t think I would’ve been successful this week, if my practical experience didn’t kick in! I’m also accountant of 10 years, just bought my first house in the bay a few months ago, and I am a single mother to five kids. I opened my first business when I was 22. And I had a lot of times I was in court where I would file legal paperwork or file a complaint . So anything related to distribution or even real property I was on it!

But to be fair, most of the people I sat with were brand new law schools graduates. And at that time, you’re probably already making a transition with life and mending relationships, etc. This has to be the most traumatizing experience I’ve had in a long time and I’ve had five kids naturally! lol so I can see why the younger students were panicking, and how much stress this has caused. I just wanted to say you guys did the best you can! I truly feel like everybody was equal this week. You got this, do not to give up. So I’m very proud of everybody! Congrats everyone. And also Life outside of law is amazing too! I know most of the students who took the exam are much younger than me, you’re still young have fun. Go enjoy your life, You deserve it.

I did not pay for an expensive bar prep program but feel confident

I went to law school part time as an older single mom who is a working professional and was taught by lawyers and judges. I’ve been studying with others who paid for expensive bar prep programs, and I felt small at first… until I knew the material better than them!

I have done simulated MBE questions and my scores were ok. But I’ve read dozens of essays and created outlines and skeletons for almost every subject tested lol and I only missed 1-2 minor issues. And now I’m relaxing because I feel like I know the subjects matter well, and worked really hard for someone who couldn’t afford these expensive bar programs.

I just wanted to say you got this to everyone!!! All pathways are not straight forward. Please stop reading these negative comments on Reddit lol. Drop any prep that doesn’t work for you and go with something that makes sense! Understand the rules and material well, but I think the essays are just as important… I don’t see a lot of post about essays vs MBE. Good luck everyone, please take breaks!
