This actually happened

Recently observed a mixed doubles tournament in Grand Haven, MI, held in conjunction with their Coast Guard festival.
The scenario: Kevin and Karen playing in a close game, the other team appears to have the momentum advantage and during the point, they launch a lob from their own baseline. Kevin immediately yells “out, any lob from the baseline is automatically out” - all this, without even turning his head to observe the ball, which landed over a foot in play. Karen, obviously intimidated by her partner Kevin, remained silent.
As an observer, I yelled that the ball was in, he screamed back “shut up, you have no say in the matter”, my input is part of the rules, I agreed - but I still called him out on it. The opposing team questioned his call, but he insisted the ball was out, for the aforementioned reason. They were forced to reluctantly accept his call for that point — thankfully they won the match.
What the hell?
