Non-target applicant

Hi everyone. I’m a non-target school applicant from FIU. I think I have a pretty solid resume; however, the aspect of the non-target university where I am pursuing my PhD at makes me nervous that they may just disregard my resume completely. Any other non-target applicants here? Or in the past that have received an interview?

Thanks!

27 y/o F - Bio PhD - career/life advice/help? Miami, FL

Background: 27 y/o F in my third year of Bio PhD. in a non-target university located in Miami. I am completely lost in life. I started the PhD excited about molecular genetics & biology and because of grant funding, my dissertation transitioned from molecular to field work/logistics/ project management of mid size to large scale studies. I’m in my 3rd year and I’m completely interested in applying to consulting firms like Bain, McKinsey, BCG, but I fear my resume will not get pulled due to a non-target University PhD. Mostly everyone i’ve worked with compliments me on my project management skills, ability to lead, multi-task, etc - which would hype up most people but when I compare myself to other target school PhDs, it doesn’t seem like what I did is much. I am now in ny third year, I don’t think i’m intelligent enough or maybe don’t even want to proceed further in molecular biology with a post-doc but I don’t think my current skills are competitive enough with others. I’m so lost, not sure if I made a mistake with the PhD or if this was going to be the outcome regardless of the lcareer track. Has anyone had a similar experience?
