Why are Maine Schools & Businesses Partnering with the State’s Most Notorious, Racist Cyber Bully?

The Maine Policy Institute co-leads a program called the "Can We? Project" with the Waynfleet School in Portland to engage high school students across Maine in civil discourse with the goal of bridging political divides.

It also runs the state’s most notorious, tax-exempt cyber bullying operation, The Maine Wire, which is solely focused on demonizing Somali immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ kids, teachers and anyone who isn’t a white Christian conservative.

It gets its funding to terrorize vulnerable communities from part-time MDI resident Leonard Leo and NYC billionaire and part-time Belgrade resident Tom Klingenstein.

Its Board of Directors includes representatives from several Maine businesses including the P.D.Q. Door Company, the Portland-based law firm PretiFlaherty, Lewiston printer Dingley Press, Cambridge Insurance Advisors, Akamai Technologies, the Muddy Dog and beverage distributor National Distributors. I believe it's time to hold them accountable for all of the pain and suffering The Maine Wire has caused in our state.

Maine Wire spread hoax about “Arabic” man kidnapping a child in So Portland

The Maine Wire/Maine Policy Institute spread a hoax that an “Arabic male” attempted to kidnap a child in a Target parking lot in South Portland. The South Portland Police had to issue a statement reporting that it never happened.

Maine Wire Editor-in-Chief Steve Robinson knows that scanner account is run by a mentally ill person with a history of posting fake stories, but it fit his narrative about evil brown people in Maine.

Why does this fake news slop machine enjoy tax exempt 501c3 status like schools and churches? This is the kind disinformation that can get people hurt.

The NY Times' Obsession with Platner's "Working Class" Cred

The NY Times story quoted Tony Buxton, a corporate lobbyist with the Portland firm Preti Flaherty, accusing Platner of lying about his business. But for some reason it didn’t mention what Buxton does for work. The Times simply described him as “a former chairman of the Maine Democratic Party who had supported Ms. Mills.”

“This is not a salt-of-the-earth guy coming up from a hardscrabble existence,” Buxton told the NY Times. “If he’s an oysterman, I’m a florist, OK? Because I raise roses and give them to my wife.”

The Times also failed to mention that Buxton represents the company seeking to build a controversial data center in Sanford and successfully lobbied to get Governor Mills to veto a data center moratorium last month. He also donated over $2,000 to Mills’ Senate campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records.

The lies, smears & dirty tricks that won Susan Collins a seat in the U.S. Senate

This pieces covers how Susan Collins & the Bangor Daily News used lies, smears & dirty tricks to defeat her Democratic opponent in her first Senate campaign in 1996.

The BDN was later sued for libel and defamation by Bob Norris, the DSCC opposition researcher it defamed as part of its manufactured scandal. After a hung jury, the paper settled with Norris for an undisclosed sum and an apology. It also granted Norris space in the newspaper to write a column about the whole affair. As he wrote,

“In central Maine, the Bangor Daily News is the only newspaper that reaches thousands of readers and voters in this region. With only one daily newspaper that cannot be trusted, where are these citizens to turn for the truth about candidates seeking to represent them?… Who you vote for depends on information available to you. If you can’t rely on the press to give you this information accurately and completely, it may be impossible for you to have the information you need to vote intelligently.”
