I'm Chuck Meyer, an Independent candidate for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3. Happy to answer questions about the race or how the JP court works. (AMA)

I've lived in The Woodlands since 1995 and I'm on the November 3 ballot as an Independent for JP Precinct 3 (The Woodlands, Spring, and Magnolia areas).

Quick background: I'm a local attorney, arbitrator, and mediator. Earlier in my career I was a patent examiner, clerked for a federal judge and the Supreme Court of Ohio, and served as Chief Legal Officer of BlackBerry. Locally, I volunteer as a mediator with the Montgomery County Dispute Resolution Center and serve on the library advisory board.

Why the JP court? It's where most people actually meet the justice system: small claims, evictions, debt cases, traffic tickets, usually without a lawyer. In Texas, a JP doesn't have to be a lawyer either. I think the people's court should have a judge with real legal training who answers to the law, not a party.

Two things I'd like to do:

  • Explore evening and Saturday sessions, so people don't have to lose a day's pay or take a personal day to be heard
  • Hold free quarterly sessions on how to handle a small claims case

One thing I won't do is take positions on political issues. Judges shouldn't, and that's a big part of why I'm running without a party label. I've been heartened to see support coming from across the political spectrum. To me, that's what a local court should look like: people of every persuasion trusting they'll get a fair hearing.

I'll be here answering questions as I see them, but particularly today from 9 a.m to 12 noon. Ask me anything about the race, the JP court, or how small claims and evictions work in Montgomery County.

Early voting is October 19-30. More at electchuckmeyer.com

Hey everyone—I’m a local attorney and mediator, and I’m running as an Independent for Justice of the Peace (Precinct 3). I’m reaching out to Millennials and Gen Zers because, under the current "Old Guard" rules, your choice for November has basically already been made for you.

Right now, the Republican nominee (the sibling of a local Constable) is set to waltz into the JP seat with zero opposition. No debate, no alternative—just a hand-off.

I am fighting to get on the ballot to provide a choice, but the barriers are high:

  • The Requirement: To qualify as an Independent, I need 500 qualified signatures from registered voters in Precinct 3.
  • The "Trap": If you voted in the Republican primary, the state legally bars you from signing my petition.
  • The Opportunity: If you voted Democratic or didn’t vote in the primary at all, you are the only ones legally allowed to sign. You are the "Secret Weapon" to breaking this monopoly.
  • The Progress: I’ve hit 136 signatures so far through pure shoe leather, but I need your help to cross the finish line.

I believe a judge should be a neutral mediator, focused on efficiency and the law, not a partisan handover. I’m not asking for your vote yet—I’m just asking for your help to make sure there is a vote.

I will come to you. My goal is 5 signatures a day during the week and 36 on weekends. If you want to see a choice on your ballot, email me at electchuckmeyer@gmail.com and I’ll put you and your neighbors on my block-walk schedule.

Let’s make sure we have an election for JP3, not a coronation.

Texas law makes it nearly impossible for an Independent to run. I’m trying to change that.
