Is long-term nicotine gum use bad for your gums or oral health?

Hi dentists,
I don’t necessarily want to quit nicotine
I just want to quit smoking cigarettes. I’m thinking about switching to nicotine gum long-term instead of smoking.
From an oral health perspective, how safe is nicotine gum if used regularly for months or even years? Does it increase the risk of gum recession, gum disease, tooth decay, irritation, jaw problems, or any other dental issues?
Compared to smoking cigarettes, is long-term nicotine gum a much better option for the teeth and gums, or are there significant downsides I should know about?
I’d appreciate any professional insight.
Thanks!
