They promised me $42,500 a year over the phone, then in the interview suddenly said it was $10 an hour. I have an engineering degree. Turns out they basically wanted me for a short-term project. I asked them if they could live on $10 an hour.

What the hell

I have an engineering degree, and I got a call about a job that paid $42,500 a year. I thought to myself: "Okay, finally, maybe something will work out." I went to the interview and they told me it was "a contract starting at $10 an hour for 10 months," and after that they "might look into converting it to a salaried position at $42,500 a year."

The funny thing is they pretty much exposed themselves. Before the money came up, they were talking about a project they expected to take 7, maybe 10 months. Then about 20 minutes later, suddenly the job became a contract.

So I asked: "Is the contract only because of this project?" The two people interviewing me looked at each other and sat there silently for about 3 seconds, then one of them said: "No." In a very weird tone.

I said: "Okay, so if I brought you in right now to work at my company for $10 an hour, would you be able to live on that? My value is $42,500 a year. I have experience and knowledge and skills. You're paying for those things, not just whatever task you need finished. This isn't a negotiation."

The older guy got pissed and said: "Listen, son, I started at $3 an hour scraping shit off chicken eggs, and - " so I cut him off and said: "So while I'm designing for your company, my value is only $7 more than scraping shit off chicken eggs?"

They told me to leave and said I'm not allowed back on company property.

I'm so fucking tired. My wife makes around $31,000 a year as a teacher, and apparently the best thing I can find as an engineer is $10 an hour? We can't afford anything. We already agreed we're never having kids because everything is so expensive and nobody pays enough.

What are we even supposed to do? Seriously, what are we working and chasing after at this point?

Small side rant, but a realtor told my mother-in-law that her mobile home is worth $265,000 and now they want us to come up with a $52,000 down payment. My mother-in-law won't move on it because she refuses to believe her daughter makes that little, even after we showed her the paystub. The cheapest apartment around us is about $1,550 a month and honestly looks like it's condemned.

I'm just fed up with all of this. I'm literally thinking about applying to Wendy's because they start at $11 an hour here. What was the point of all these loans if fast food pays better than the engineering work I can find?

A small interview tip: If they ask you, "What salary are you looking for?", asking "What range did you have in mind?" worked for me.

I've been asked this question several times in interviews recently, and each time I responded with some version of "What range did you have in mind?" So far, they've told me the band very directly. And I don't feel like they're making up numbers either, because the numbers were close to what I was expecting.

So yeah, if a recruiter or hiring manager asks you how much compensation you're looking for, try asking them about their range first. In my experience, they'll usually give you a real answer right away.

I freeze in interviews and come across much worse than I really am. What should I do so they can see that I'm capable?

Give me a take-home task or a real problem to work on, and I'll probably do good work. But put me on a call with three people asking me questions one after another, and I mess everything up. Even when I practice a lot, I still mess it up. My mind goes completely blank, and afterward I can't tell if anything I'm saying even sounds normal or not. If it were a written interview or even chat-based, I would come across much better.

This week I spent hours preparing, and I had strong written answers ready, but as soon as the interview started, I felt like none of that made any difference.
