Villain Archetypes

I have been rewatching a couple of long forms and watching some compilations when I was thinking about this. While the tagline of the group is ‘never happen before and it will never happen again’, there are some common character types and tropes they often come back to. It’s not a bad thing, but I and a lot of others have noticed. Especially the way they play villains.

Im labeling these archetypes from my personal opinion, not all characters fit under this trope, it’s just a pattern I noticed.

Sam- ‘The Joker’, a lot of his villains fit under the chaotic evil umbrella (e.x. The Children, Marty Jr). They are chaotic little gremlins who usually have some type of silly voice. Yeah they can do some fucked up shit at times, but in a fun ‘this persons messed up, but he’s funny’ kind of way. Sort of like the Joker, most of the time.

Tom- ‘The Patrick Bateman’, his villains lean more towards the serious side. Yeah, they’re still fun and comedic, but have a much darker more serious side to them (e.x. Darren, the circus zookeeper). You’re mean to not like them so when they do bad stuff you boo them instead of cheering them on. He goes for a more realistic approach.

AJ- ‘The Palpatine,’ I feel like AJ is more of an all rounder in the way he plays villains. Sometimes, he’s camp, sometimes he’s serious. But he has a tendency to be the overarching villain of the story (e.x. Don Albert, The High Visionary). While the character may not be on stage or even do a lot of the villainous things, a lot of the story threads can be traced back to them.

Luke- ‘The Harley Quinn’, this one was a little bit harder as Luke doesn’t really play evil characters most of the time. They tend to be good or morally grey at best. But when he does play a villain, he is usually playing second fiddle to them (e.x Little Krampus, Bitchwife). The Harley Quinn to their Joker. Their sidekick.

This was just a fun little character analysis from me. Like I said, not all villains fit this mold. So I’m curious to see if anyone has any exceptions or rebuttals to this.

What is a ship that used be relatively rare in your fandom but grew in popularity? Or what ship used to be super popular but has since fallen off?

In the Squid Games fandom, Sangihun was THE ship. It checked off the boxes. Gay, tragic, relatively attractive, etc. At least to my knowledge, I wasn’t super deep into the fandom back then. While there were Inhun shippers, it was rare and they only interacted towards the end. Hell, Inho was shipped with his brother more than Gihun.

Then, season two came out and Inhun just exploded in popularity. Sangihun is still popular, of course. But it’s been largely tossed aside, mostly because Inhun is providing the ‘doomed toxic yaoi itch’ more.

On the other hand, in the Hazbin fandom, Radiodust was the most popular ship. Like if you didn’t know Hazbin, then you know Radiodust, it’s how I got into Hazbin myself. It helped that they were two of Vivzie’s oldest and favorite characters, plus hunicast. However, when the show actually came out and they barely interacted if at all, the ship went down. It didn’t help that rarer ship Radioapple became more popular which filled Radiodust’s niche. And not to mention that Angelhusk is basically canon at this point.

It seems that when a ship goes down in popularity, a ship with a similar dynamic takes its place.
