Advice for a complete noob DM

So, I’ve never DM’s before - or even played a tabletop RPG in my life. Not counting CRPG’s. Very soon I will be the DM for a friend group playing DnD in a planescape setting. The group consists of a majority of people who are exactly the same background as me, and two other players with a decent experience playing TRPG’s.

First of all the reason why I’m drawn to a Planescape setting, specifically and maybe even entirely Sigil, is because of Planescape Torment. I never even played more than a couple hours due to finding it annoyingly outdated but absolutely loved the world, vibe, atmosphere, characters etc etc.

I guess my question is… how the hell do I get started? I own 0 physical media. One friend has all the dice, DM screens and such but no books.

The 2e version of the setting looks infinitely better to me than the sanitised version in 5e. I’m really craving that grimey dangerous feel of the hive.

I also would really like our first module and introduction to the city to be the eternal boundary and perhaps followed by dead gods or harbinger house. All these are 2e modules.

This brings me in to my next issue…

It looks like I’d have to convert all these adventures in to 5e rules. I have absolutely no idea how to do that. Either that or I could just play with 2e rules. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, maybe some advice they can give me on which is the better route?

I also am having general problems with getting my head around how what’s written in the module adventure actually comes to life in a session, what I’m required to know and I can string it all together as the DM.

To summarise, I’m a complete 100% noob and could do with some pointers to get in to the planescape setting. Feel absolutely free to correct me on anything as I’m struggling to research all of this!!

Neighbour operating a tyre repair business from home - England

My neighbour moved in a year ago and has recently went “self employed.”

He’s got a new big ol van with his business name on it plus many other vehicles. They’re all parked on the street and spill out all over the place, taking up the street in front of our drive that we use for when guests come over. It doesn’t actually block our dropped curb. I know we don’t own the street so this is what it is.

He is often working on vehicles on the street in front of his house and this can get very noisy, what sounds like compressors going, hammers banging, saw-like sounds. He was also blasting loud music all the time too but after a few words with him that had at least stopped.

I overheard him today negotiating a price with a customer on the phone (loudly speaking in his garden) and they later dropped the vehicle off and work commenced from 9pm till about 9.45pm.

The whole street is starting to look like a junkyard and the constant noise is doing my head in. He has a business social media and posts videos of his work which are mostly breakdowns and stuff but a lot of the work seems to be getting handled at his home address. We live in a semi detached house so his house is attached to ours.

I don’t want to ruin this guys way of earning money but at the same time I now essentially live next to a garage and it’s fucking annoying. When they’re not working on repairs there sitting out on the drive in deckchairs and drinking. It feels very invasive.

Let me know your thoughts, would you let it go? If you did go the legal route, what are the options?

For all the fellow Brits / Europeans - how are you planning on dealing with this heatwave?

It’s going to be reaching 35 Celsius and we do not have any form of AC here. How the hell do we keep our pugs safe? My guy is only 8 months old and I’m new to this!

Mexican food in the UK

Hey everyone,

I’m based in the UK and I’m in the early stages of developing a small taco-focused food concept. I’m still in the testing phase, so I wanted to ask for honest advice from people who know the food properly.

I don’t have Mexican heritage and I haven’t been to Mexico, so I’m very aware I’m approaching this as an outsider. What I do have is a strong interest in Mexican cooking and a desire to build something that’s done properly and respectfully, not a watered-down “Mexican-inspired” version.

My current idea is to focus on tacos (likely a small set of fillings) served as a box of 4, with a choice of dipping broth on the side — either a birria-style consommé or a green salsa-based broth. I’m still experimenting with formats like tacos dorados vs softer tacos, and keeping toppings quite simple (thinking onion, coriander, likely cheese depending on direction).

I’ll be making the birria style broth with authentic dried chilli’s and other ingredients that are true to the roots.

Where I’m stuck is direction:
I want to avoid doing something that sits awkwardly between styles. Would it be better to aim for a clearly defined regional inspiration (e.g. birria-style / specific Mexican regional influence), or is there value in a more Tex-Mex / LA street food approach if it’s executed well?

More than anything, I’d really appreciate guidance on:

What you feel is important when someone outside the culture is cooking this food

Common mistakes you see in UK/European “Mexican” food

What you’d actually want to see done properly if you were eating it outside Mexico

I’m not trying to “reinvent” anything — just trying to understand how to approach it in the right way while I’m still early in development. Also, this isn’t some big operation. It would be a very humble setup most likely selling it out of my own kitchen.

Unfortunately though I’ll still be calling them tack-oh’s, it’s hard with my accent to say it any other way!!
